Let me begin by explaining that I do have a very busy mind and I think that is why the abstract form is attractive to me. Much of what is seen in my paintings will be a direct feeling of how I am thinking on a certain day or time. I started painting about 5 years ago and the process has given me the opportunity to put my feelings on canvas or paper which I have enjoyed very much.
The majority of my paintings incorporate some aspect of movement. It might be sweeping lines that intersect or a circular motion that gives the impression of movement. The intersecting lines may represent our lives that cross with other individuals or situations. Everything in our lives and universe involves some sort of physical action and quite often we return to where we started. This can be the earth in orbit or our individual lives that evolve and revolve around our work, family, the games we play, the seasons of the year and the day turning into night and then back to day.
Our own lives begin with our birth and end with our final breath. Everything keeps repeating itself. This can be something we expect and are comfortable with because we thrive on some sort of repetitiveness. We all or should have some wonderful ways of making our lives interesting and that is why I like to add so much colour to my paintings. I enjoy layering the colours and lines that give the picture depth just like our own lives.
I use very opaque paint in some situations and also transparent paints that show the different colours that are underneath. Every painting I do means a great deal to me. Each one is slow to start, kind of like a first date. Nervousness to begin with but as I become more comfortable with the paint and the way it is being transferred onto the canvas, the picture begins to take the form. In the end it is a combined effort of my mind, the brush, the paint and the canvas that makes for a good painting and relationship.
I think sometimes the painting will have a mind of it¹s own and won¹t give me that feeling that it is complete and I have to put it aside and keep going back to add or subtract a bit here and there. I have found over the years the picture will let you know when it is comfortable enough to move on. As I mentioned, I have a busy mind and life and I believe this is shown in many of my paintings. I enjoy trying different techniques and materials that give the painting, movement, depth and texture, just like all our lives.
