    Biography

Ever since I left the city, my life began a new. I had always wanted to live in a rural environment where I
could focus on my own creativity on a full time basis.
Irma’s transition to this rural environment began in 2008 when she first moved to Oxford County from
Toronto where she had lived most of her life. When she first arrived to Woodstock, Ontario she
integrated herself with a networking group of artists, then known as Artists of Oxford. Over the course of
almost a decade, the artist has participated in a number of local and regional exhibitions. Irma recently
exhibited her work in a solo exhibition, “Synergy”, at the Tillsonburg Station Arts Centre in January
2019. Her art work has been displayed in a number of group shows as well, including the Woodstock Art
Gallery, the Ingersoll Creative Arts Centre, the Arts Project Gallery in London, Ontario, and the Hamilton
Art Gallery. She has also exhibited her work with the Oxford Creative Connections and during the Oxford
Studio Tour as well as during the Norfolk Studio Tour at her own studio for the last three consecutive
    years.
She is a graduate of OCAD and has earned a BA in Fine Art History at the University of Toronto. In the
past, Irma has also shown her art abroad in Lithuana and Latvia as well as in Chicago, USA.
Currently Irma is in the process of preparing a mother and daughter exhibition at the Norfolk Arts Centre
in Simcoe, Ontario scheduled for October 2020.
Irma is a mixed media artist who integrates found objects with acrylic paint and mediums to create
textured surfaces. Her work is meticulous and involving where she overlaps many layers, building one
layer over another, sometimes allowing the previous ones to show through. Each series of work that I
focus on is often thematic, and profound, personal, multi-layered, whether exploring mythology or
    ancient forms of writing.
Irma’s art work can be viewed on-line: www.irmamakariunaiteart.ca and in person at her studio near
Delhi, Ontario, where she has recently settled. Studio visits are available year-round and by appointment.
